A not-so-daily collection of thoughts and pics about the Rowson clan...and especially Beckett and Ayla.

Fun in Kansas

After the luau we headed over to Laura and Anthony's house and got some excellent barbeque. Hilary and Mike stopped by with their girls. While Halle and Ayla got some time together in the grass, Beckett, Maryn and Henry ran wild, played "Monster" and knocked heads.

At some point in every game or activity Beckett decides to transition things into Wrestlemania/football. Everyone around him pays the price in bruises, but it is really funny to watch. That laughter in the background after Beckett's (first) cheapshot on Henry is, well, Henry's mom.

Danika's birthday luau

This past weekend found us in Kansas City for Danika's first birthday party. The luau theme was complete with leis, tropical drinks and floral shirts. Even the rare father-daughter photo was snapped.

Mema did face painting for the kids (and adults). Beckett, naturally, chose the most involved of the options: a fire-breathing dragon.

They're only three months apart but Danika's getting around bipedal-style while Ayla's just figuring out how to cruise around by rolling. We think she'll be crawling in the next few weeks. Oh, and incisors are popping through her bottom gums. That's big news.

Tuesdays with Grammy

Beckett loves Tuesdays and Thursday mornings. Grammy comes over and they work on letters and all sorts of projects. Last week it was repopulating the planter by the mailbox. Between this and the veggie garden, Beckett's getting some serious plant-time in these days.

The Greats

Great Grandpa and Grandma Rowson partook of our Mother's Day dinner the other day, and got in some good Ayla time. Dad and I did all the cooking and dishes while the various moms in attendance relaxed, drank wine and played with the kiddos.

Yes, she really is this cute

Eye of the Tiger

This is Beckett and Ayla's blog. But today one of our favorite people in the world received an amazing - though well-deserved - honor. Christina was named "Washington Times Employee of the Year."

Christina really is a great example of the new era in journalism. She blogs, she writes, she takes pictures and video, she's on tv, she's on radio...really, she does it all and all very well. Congrats to her.

Ayla gets pissed

One critical moment in childhood development is the awareness that "I want X and you just took it from me. Boo hoo." In just the past week Ayla has crossed that threshold. Before it kind of went like this:

Ayla: "Oooh, this knife is soooo shiny. I'm going to check out this pointy end."
Dad takes knife away.
Ayla: "What was I just playing with? Oooh, ceiling fans are pretty."

This morning Beckett took a big-kid book away from Ayla, who was trying to shove it in her mouth. He was in the right, but she -- possessed now of the concept of, well, possession -- didn't care for it one bit. On came a brief display of the waterworks. Mom and Dad cooed.

Beckett promoted in soccer (again), Dad getting even more annoying

Beckett has been playing indoor soccer in Columbia for about four months now. After a few weeks playing with the 4 year-olds, his coach said he needed to move up to the 4 to 6 year-old class to get "bounced around a bit more." He's very aggressive and handsy, you see.

He played there for a couple of months but after his "game" (really just running through some drills and learning how to listen to a coach) Saturday morning the coach pulled us aside and said he should come at 2pm that afternoon to play with the competitive Under-6 kids. They keep score, have teams and generally know what they're doing. Plus, coach said, "he'll get his ass kicked a little more" and push him.

(Parental Disclaimer: In the interest of distancing ourselves from "tennis-dad" comparisons, we want to make it clear that Beckett is driving this. All he wants to do is eat, play soccer and wear one of his two or three soccer shirts. That's it. Oh, and sometimes watch soccer. We're just saying.)

We'll get some video taken and posted soon, but suffice it to say, Beckett held his own very well. Some of the kids are two years older and a foot taller, but Beckett still put in five of his team's fifteen goals. They won 15-13 (goalkeeping at this stage consists primarily of standing in one spot and not letting the ball roll through you).

Mom and Dad were unsure whether the right emotion was pride or horror at witnessing the end of their non-soccer lives for the next fourteen years. The team practices Monday night with games Saturday afternoon. Oh, and now he's signed up for a few weeks of swimming lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
